Abstract

Introduction: The highest risk of HPV infection coincides with the period of greatest metaplastic activity. Objective: To describe the cofactors of human papillomavirus infection in women with low-grade cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions. Method: A descriptive study was conducted in 210 women attending the cervical pathology clinic at the “Mariana Grajales” Teaching Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital in Santa Clara, Villa Clara, from January 1 to December 31, 2023. Results: Most patients began sexual activity before the age of 20, had more than 20 years of sexual life, and reported having had two or three sexual partners over the course of their lives. A total of 167 patients were non-smokers, only 17.5% used contraceptive methods that offered protection against sexually transmitted infections, and 70.3% had given birth once or twice. Conclusions: It is concluded that women with low-grade cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions exhibit infection cofactors for the human papillomavirus that are favorable for the development of cervical cancer.
