Abstract

Background: The prevalence of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is not well established. Symptomatic POP has a prevalence of 3-6%, and anatomical prolapse affects half of patients, a prevalence of prolapse surgery between 6-18% has also been reported, ranging from 1,5 to 1,8 per 1000 women per year, reaching its peak in women between 60 and 69 years of age. Approximately 200000 women are reported to have undergone POP repair procedures annually.  Materials and methods: Retrospective, observational case series study and literature review, which included 50 adult women who underwent a reconstructive vaginal hysterectomy with colpopexy to the sacrospinous ligament with CAPIO, with a postoperative observation and follow-up period of 24 months. Search electronic databases from 1997 to 2022. We found 234 studies from which we excluded editorials, reviews, and duplicate articles. 13 studies were selected.  Conclusions: The good anatomical and functional results after performing colpopexy to the sacrospinous ligament using this technique in patients undergoing a vaginal hysterectomy, highlight the importance of performing the technique as systematically and organized as possible as described in the literature.
